Starting from the frame

The original bathroom had dark floor tiles, a black bath and black fittings, but the wall tiles stopped at shoulder height, there was one basin shared between two people, and a single overhead light made the room feel smaller and flatter than it was.

The owners had considered a lighter refresh — a new vanity, different tapware — but the plumbing wasn't positioned for a double vanity and the electrical only served one overhead fitting. Fixing both properly meant going back to the frame rather than working around them.

The tile and bathroomware selection was worked through at the Devine Tiles Geelong West showroom. The final selection included floor-to-ceiling Calacatta marble-look porcelain, twin black vessel basins, a black freestanding bath, backlit LED mirrors and matte black tapware and accessories throughout.

The partial-height wall tiles and single overhead light were doing most of the damage. Running the tile floor to ceiling and adding proper mirror lighting changed how the room felt without changing its footprint.

What we supplied

The owners wanted a high-contrast, monochrome look, so we started with the tile selection and built the bathroomware around it. Here's what went into the finished room.

  • Calacatta marble-look porcelain wall tile, floor to ceiling

    Wall & shower tiles

Large-format Calacatta marble-look porcelain, run floor to ceiling on every wall and inside the shower. Ask in-store for the current range name and slab size.

    Wall tile
  • Companion porcelain floor tile with softer veining

    Floor tiles

A companion porcelain in the same palette with less veining, so the floor reads with the walls without competing with them.

    Floor tile
  • Twin black vessel basins on the double vanity

    Vessel basins — pair

Round black vessel basins, one each on the double vanity, so two people can get ready at the same time.

    Basins
  • Black freestanding bath against the marble tile wall

    Freestanding bath

White interior, matte black exterior, with a matching matte black floor-mount tap.

    Bath
  • Backlit oval LED mirrors above the vanity

    LED oval mirrors — pair

Backlit oval mirrors above each basin, lighting the vanity at face height rather than from the ceiling.

    Mirrors
  • Matte black towel rail, flush button and accessories

    Tapware & accessories

Basin mixers, towel rail, toilet roll holder, flush button and drain covers, all in matte black to keep the finish consistent.

How the finishes were selected

The wall tile was the starting point for the selection. Once the Calacatta marble-look porcelain was chosen, we looked for a floor tile that would sit with it rather than compete with it.

The floor uses a quieter, less-veined porcelain in the same palette, so it reads as a companion to the wall tile rather than a second pattern in the room. Matte black bathroomware then gave the basins, bath and tapware a single, consistent finish across the space.

When choosing products for a bathroom, it's worth looking at the wall tile, floor tile and bathroomware together rather than making each decision separately. A combination can look quite different once the products are seen side by side.

Full strip-out, same room

The before shot shows the dark floor tiles, black bath and partial-height wall tiles the room started with. The after is taken from a similar position — the vanity moved to fit two basins, the tile now runs floor to ceiling instead of stopping at shoulder height, and a single overhead light became recessed downlights and backlit mirrors.

Questions about this project

The original wall tile stopped around shoulder height. Taking the new tile all the way to the ceiling removed that horizontal break and allowed the marble-look pattern to read as one continuous surface.
The wall tile has stronger Calacatta-style veining, while the floor tile is quieter. Using a softer pattern on the floor keeps the room from becoming too visually busy.
Yes. For this project, Devine Tiles supplied the tiles, vessel basins, freestanding bath, mirrors, tapware and other bathroom fittings.
